Smack bang in the middle of the busiest district in Hong Kong, Mandarin Oriental has been a historical landmark in Central since it first opened back in 1963. In close proximity to the biggest names in entertainment, retail and commerce, it is also conveniently located to access the MTR, trams, buses, star ferry and taxis to get you anywhere in the city. Right before the waterfront, it also offers unobstructed views of Victoria Harbour and the Kowloon peninsula.

As one would imagine, the space is beautifully decorated to embrace the hotel’s Oriental heritage – with handcrafted details and décor that echo Asian influences. The Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong is rich with culture and tradition, as seen through its old and restored furniture and accents. But is also decorated with updated details that cater to the modern traveller (albeit domestic at this current moment) to give a contemporary fresh feel to the hotel.
Ambience 9/10
Known for its old-time charm, Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong may seem like a posh place of the past. But the air of luxury isn’t pretentious at all, and in fact, very calming and relaxing. The oversized chandeliers that hang in the lobby lounge and opulent fittings gives off a sense of grandeur but at the same time is inviting and warm.

With 432 oversized guestrooms, Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong’s classic rooms exude the same Asian furnishing elements apparent throughout the venue. Yet, deviating away from the design codes slightly, the hotel holds six unique signature suites, each unique to an inspiration dear to the Mandarin. We stayed at the Lichfield suite; a room dedicated to the late photographer Patrick Lichfield, who considered the MO his Asian home away from home. The room in the style of his studio in his eclectic style incorporates his works and memorabilia, as well as full-sized telescope to take in the night sky and sweeping views. The highlight of the room, however, is the famous standalone bathtub that is positioned right in front of the Hong Kong Post Office and ferris wheel before the harbour.
Service & Facilities 10/10
While the pool, spa and gym are closed because of the current pandemic restrictions, the tastemakers at MO have thoughtfully designed a menu of activities to keep guests entertained. Art lovers can enjoy an exclusive art tour at the Levy Gorvy Gallery across the street. Those who are all about wine and dine can venture into the kitchen for a chocolate masterclass, or lounge in the Mandarin Bar + Grill for a wine appreciation or mixology class. Or if arts and crafts are your thing, get creative with a flower wreath class. Children are also taken care of with kid-friendly activities such as a chocolate hunt, towel and balloon art class, manicure workshop and access to the Kid’s Club for games.
