‘I give all of me when I sing a song’

Irrespective of the budget and genre, whether in film or non-film space, says Asees Kaur

Musically, it’s been a satisfying year for Asees Kaur, as she had Bollywood and non-film songs in equal measure. She entered 2019 with chartbusters Tere Bin co-sung by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan (Simmba) and Ve Maahi (Kesari). At the fag end have come Ankhiyon Se Goli Maare Returns (Pati Pani Aur Woh) and Chandigarh Mein from Good Newz. However, Asees Kaur is happier because she dropped several singles– Intezaar with Arijit Singh, Choodiyan with Dev Negi, and Mujhe Jeene De with Krsna Solo among others. “Though, Kisi Aur Naal is the one that’s extremely close to my heart. I featured in a video for the first time. It was like my baby; I was involved in the sound, instruments, and lyrical changes from day one till the release. It came out on my birthday (September 26), so, it was like a gift,” she enthuses. (TMM)

Ergo, it took some persuasion on the label VYRL Originals’ part to have her star in it. “It took me several classes and trials to get it right,” she laughs. “But, I’m proud of the way it turned out,” she smiles. Although nervous about her ‘acting’ debut, the experience has encouraged her to be seen in more videos. “I won’t feature in all of them but will pick and choose,” she states.

As far as selecting playback projects to go, Asees Kaur songs, the only criterion is connecting with the song. That explains why she’s had Bimar Dil in a potboiler Pagalpanti alongside Pyaar Toh Tha in Bala or Intezari in Article 15 this year. “Whether a big project or small, mainstream or indie, film song or private, I give all of me when I sing. For me, a song is a song and that’s it,” she avers. That applies to genres as well, from a club song Akh Lad Jaave to a romantic Ve Maahi. “I feel blessed that listeners have accepted me in different styles. Singers get typecast easily but I’m glad I’ve been able to showcase my versatility,” says the artist who has sung Ishqbaaziyaan and Le Jaana in the upcoming movie, Happy Hardy & Heer. As a parting shot, Asees says, “I hope to continue touching the audiences’ hearts with my songs in 2020 as well.”
