Editor’s Notes: From Nike to Vans to Salomon, there are very few sneaker brands that COMME des GARÇONS doesn’t collaborate with. All those special shoes must be exhausting to design, though, if COMME des GARÇONS SHIRT’s latest ASICS are anything to go off of.

Personally, I’m a big fan of CdG SHIRT. Over the years, the sub-label has expanded its output beyond basic shirting (a task taken over by CDG SHIRT FOREVER)to include a variety of hardy workwear and collaborations with artists like KAWS, Futura, Yue Minjun.

The prices of SHIRT’s in-house designs are solid, especially considering that much of it is still made in France, and the pieces are wearable but not boring. Lots of chore coats, patchworked shirts, and high-rise trousers in fun colors, a suitably COMME flip on workwear staples.

After early alignments with Spalwart and in-house designs, COMME des GARÇONS SHIRT and ASICS dropped their second collab last year, a Tarther sneaker and strange slip-on.

This new collaboration again centers on the Tarther, realized here in either blue or yellow-tinged leopard print.

Now, look, I love a funky pattern — Hender Scheme‘s faux python pieces are good stuff, and Stüssy knows its way around a wacky, wearable accent.

There’s just something about leopard print that’s just wildly unappealing, though. Maybe it’s the unsalvagable boomer associations — I can only kinda get behind the pattern’s punkish inclinations.

Admittedly, CdG SHIRT opted for a colorful take that’s almost more camouflage than big cat but I can’t shake the unsavory associations. Shame, the Tarther is a great retro silhouette and clean white is a good look. I just can’t get past the kitsch.
