In Flight Essentials

Flying is an immense privilege. And sometimes a total pain. The many hours I’ve spent in the air has given me ample time to research and hone the science of flying, and to figure out what works and doesn’t work while on the plane.

Sure, you don’t want to lug around a huge carry-on full of stuff you probably won’t use while in flight, but you also don’t want to pack the bare minimum and wind up bored, or even worse, sick.

My most valuable learning has been to pack my in-flight essentials in my carry-on, and never take them out. Meaning, they will not be forgotten for the next flight. Already pre-packed, ready to go when I need them.

Below, are the things I swear by while traveling by plane.

Hard Sided Carry-On

A hard-sided carry on is a must. I’ve tried many different versions of carry-on bags, and the hard-sided rolling ones seem to hold the most, keep your stuff organized, and endure the least amount of damage in overhead bins. I also like that you can place your purse on top while maneuvering through the airport, so you can have both hands free. Here are my favorites in every price range.

Noise Cancelling Headphones

I like to sleep on planes. I know not all can do so, but for those who find themselves tossing and turning, I think trying noise cancelling headphones may help. I like that they serve dual purposes, both for entertaining yourself while awake by listening to music or watching movies with great quality sound, and by drowning out the noise from the plane while trying to catch some sleep. Not to mention, the constant dull thrum of the engine and machinery onboard is so disruptive to your nervous system. Blocking out that intensity makes such a difference for helping avoid jet lag.

Silk Pillowcase & Eye Mask

Who wants to rest their head on ancient, scratchy polyester pillows? I certainly don’t. I always bring my own pillowcase to avoid irritation on my face and frizzy hair.

Soft Blanket

Piggybacking on the above, I certainly do not want to sleep with a scratchy blanket on top of me for hours on end. I always stash my old Caviar & Cashmere blanket with me in my carry-on (for those of you who don’t know, I used to design cashmere home and fashion accessories.) There are so many blankets that you can easily fold or roll up that do not take too much space in the bag for optimal coziness in flight.

Toiletries

I always keep these items in a toiletry bag in my carry on and never take them out, since you’ll inevitably need them on every flight. Especially the anti-bacterial wipes, which I use to wipe down every surface imaginable in and around my plane seat before I sit down. Trust me, I swear by this and rarely, if ever, get sick after flying!

Safe travels!
