Italian Artist Roberta Coni’s most intimate of collections ascends upon Galeries Bartoux’s brand new gallery at Avenue Matignon in Paris this autumn. From 22 November, Coni will display a selection of artworks in which she combines strong realism with an array of rougher materials. Not to mention an integration of video-art reflecting the language used in her paintings.
Galeries Bartoux Matignon presents Roberta Coni
Born in Marino, Italy and a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, Roberta Coni has worked with galleries from around the world, while also earning grants in Spain and the United States. Fast-forward ten years from her graduation and in 2009, she started to research large-scale paintings and how the face has a habit of emerging from the shadows. This has enabled Coni to develop her main interest, the human figure.
Expanding on her passion, Roberta Coni uses a heavy body paste mixed with traditional oil painting. While the female figure enables her to create poignant expressions, the brush pays a particular acute attention to the pictorial surface and its secret pulse, directly focusing on the skin and eyes, which really draws you into each painting. This transparency to the soul in Coni’s work is best captured poet Khalil Gibran’s words,
“I know faces, because I look through the fabric my own eyes weave, and I behold the reality beneath”
We can’t think of a better way to feature Roberta Coni’s particular skill than her current project on the Devine Comedy by Dante Alighieri. Through pictorial realisation, she will paint the epic poem in its entirety. An ambitious undertaking nonetheless, we look forward to seeing the heroic story unwind in her art work.
