If her name doesn’t ring a bell, perhaps the candy-coloured interiors of India Mahdavi will jog your memory. From the powder pink-drenched booths of London’s Michelin-starred Sketch restaurant to the whimsical, checkered Ladurée tea house in Geneva, the work of the Parisian-based designer has always been laced with a touch of the saccharine. That’s also the case for her new “True Velvet” fabric collection for French furnishing house Pierre Frey.
As the name suggests, the “True Velvet” collection explores the possibilities of the plush fabric for a range of designs that are rich in colour. The results are stunning, which is only to be expected of a designer whose signature fabric is velvet.
“Velvet is one of the rare materials that is sensual and at the same time can carry luminous deep colour. I like to make use of contrasts that play on graphic elements and intense bright colours. With this collection, velvet has taken another dimension, which is both joyful and enveloping, the image of all that I love,” says Mahdavi.
If you’d like your home to look as good as it feels, take a pick from one of the 80 monochrome shades offered on the “True Velvet” collection. Curated by the “Queen of Colour” herself, the shades have been specially chosen to illuminate interiors and create spaces that are equally sensual and alluring.
The collection also features two geometric patterns, with the self-explanatory names of “Diamonds” and “Stripes”, that can be used to decorate surfaces for a modern edge. On top of that, customers can choose between three different weaves: fine, (cotton), medium (cotton) and bold (cotton and mohair).
