For Aryan Pandit, the boy next door of Benaras, the real meaning of life came to him while sitting on the ghat of the holy Ganges when he was in class 8 and that’s when he decided to make something meaningful in his life. Along with his regular studies, he started participating in extracurricular activities and while doing Economics Hons. from BHU he did a SWOT analysis and realised that he had been inclined towards performing arts. Soon this analysis made his way to Mumbai and he became a part of the television industry with Na Aana Is Desh Laado and then he shot to fame with Naagin. The 27-year-old actor has learned a lot in life and 2019 taught him more at the personal front, when he had a faceoff with depression and anxiety. Excerpts from the interview with TMM:
Aryan Pandit, 2019 has been a tough year for you. Tell us about your fight with depression and anxiety.
It all started after 1 year when I took a break from Naagin. I met with an accident and then financial liabilities were there that kept me under pressure. I felt everything and everyone is fake. It happened one day that I was on the beach and was unconscious and when I came back home I realised that I lost my phone and footwear too. That was the point when it triggered me and I realised that this world has always been cruel and now I need to take some step to get back to life, before the negativity overpowers me. My dad’s struggle with life gave me that inner power and I decided to stop looking back and start anew. And that is when the change began.
What is the biggest learning that this phase of life has taught you?
I have become self-reliant and have started finding happiness in every moment of life. Now when I look back it may sound easy to narrate but that phase was very dark and made me understand why it is important to balance your work and life. Going forward I have decided to devote time for myself, do things that make me happy and create a line, where professional and personal life are defined, so that neither of them overpower and destroy the other. Also, I have realised that it’s a moment thing, if handled with care and under right supervision of medical experts; one can surely overcome the darkest phase of life and live happily forever.
What is your suggestion for those suffering from depression and anxiety?
First and foremost, talk about it to your family or someone who you think can understand your complexity. In case you don’t have someone, seek medical advice on priority and don’t let any negative thought creep in. It is easier said than done, so the best way is to bring it out and talk. Once you know the root cause of it after discussion, if needed take medicine and try to do everything that makes you happy and relaxed. Life is beyond just a phase and we all need to understand that and live for the bigger dreams that we all have and make them true.
Now that you are fit and fine, what else is coming up at the professional front?
There are a couple of big projects in the pipeline and very soon I will reveal about it. For now, I am trying to concentrate on my health, fitness, and make the best of pandemic time at home in terms of doing something creative, watch online series and understand the nuances of performances.
What do you make of social media as a tool that triggers negativity among people?
Everything has pros and cons and the same rule applies to social media too. I personally feel that it starts affecting us only when we allow it. It is very important to define a time limit for everything in our daily routine. Once we start practicing the same it becomes easy to avoid such negativity that is hollow and baseless. In my opinion, it’s the best tool for us as public figures to connect with our fans and understand what they expect from us.
