Johanna Kandel | Founder and CEO, the Alliance for Eating Disorders Awareness
After recovering from a 10-year battle with various eating disorders, Johanna Kandel wanted to help others struggling as well. In 2000, she founded the Alliance for Eating Disorders Awareness, which has brought information about eating disorders to more than 235,000 middle school, high school, and college students nationally and internationally. By facilitating weekly support groups and mentoring individuals with eating disorders and their families as they go through their treatment and recovery, Kandel has helped thousands of people gain information and find the help they need, all while advocating for legislation on local, state, and national levels.
She is the president of the board of directors for the Eating Disorders Coalition for Research, Policy, and Action; a member of the Academy for Eating Disorders advisory board; a founding board member of the Eating Disorders Activist Network; an expert advisory committee member for Girl Future; and a participant in National Eating Disorders Awareness Month. She has received many awards for her ongoing outreach and advocacy work, including the Jefferson Award for Public Service and Harlequin Enterprises‘ More Than Words Award.
