Purveyor of unusual properties, Johnny Depp owns several unique homes around the globe from a stable in Kentucky, a private island in the Bahamas (affectionately termed “F*** Off Island”) and a compound of five homes in Hollywood Hills. Recently, it appeared the Pirates of the Caribbean star was set to relist one of his most interesting properties, a charming 19th century French village in Le Plan-de-la-Tour, just 17 miles from Saint-Tropez.

Johnny Depp purchased the abandoned village in 2001 for an undisclosed amount and then millions more to restore and renovate the several buildings that made up his new property. The main residence where he stayed with his former partner, Vanessa Paradis, and their two children, covers 4,500 square-feet of living space. While most other properties would include rooms for guests, visitors to this quaint village can spend their stay in one of six renovated guest cottages. One which was the town’s old church. Depp included a private restaurant called Chez Marceline, with outdoor dining in the town square, where he and his family frequently had meals during their stays. While most of the buildings in the Provencal village were built back in the 19th century, the film star added a few modern amenities, some conventional, others reflective of his eccentric personality. These include a gypsy-styled covered wagon (updated with bath and kitchen), two swimming pools, a skate park, gym, art studio, and wine cave complete with pirate lair décor. Total living space for all the buildings ranges between 12,900 and 14,500 square-feet.

The village is located in the scenic Provence region of France, surrounded by rolling hills capped with lush olive groves, ancient oak trees and vibrant vineyards. It was at this prime piece of real estate that Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis spent much of their 14-year relationship, raising their 2 children, Lily-Rose and Jack. That is, till their split in 2012. Since then, Depp reportedly put the village on the market twice, in 2015 and 2016 for US$25 million and US$63 million. This time, the French estate will have a reported asking price of $55.5 million. The sale is likely to be handled again by Gibson Sotheby’s International Realty so head over to their site for the latest developments. If you’re searching for a beautiful home in the French countryside where you can essentially choose your own neighbours, this idyllic village could be just the place for you.
