Josephine’s Restaurant – London’s oldest Filipino restaurant

Josephine’s Restaurant Oldest Filipino restaurant

Filipino restaurants in London are a rarity, Tripadvisor website only shows a handful of the search engines. I came across Josephine’s restaurant in Charlotte Street and always wanted to try more Filipino dishes.

Josephine’s Restaurant has been running in central London for over 20 years’ family-run serving authentic Filipino dishes. Although it may seem like a shabby looking restaurant it does serve great Filipino food.  The restaurant was empty when I arrived and in the duration of 1 one hour, the only person they served. Filipino cuisine is an interesting mix, the Spanish invaded the islands so it has Spanish Asian influences.

On the menu

The a la carte menu has a range of different meat dishes but I opted for the 2-course set lunch of £11, starters vegetarian spring rolls. Rolled up chunky and deep-fried crispy, served with chilli sauce. I must admit these vegetarian rolls taste nicer than Chinese style ones.

Adobo

The first-ever chicken adobo I tried was at Lakwatsa which was more of runny stew with thin strips of chicken in sauce with rice balls. Chicken adobo at Josephine’s comes in chunkier chicken pieces, immersed in a special Filipino sauce tasting a mixture of savoury, sourness. Loaded up with long grain rice, grilled peppers and a side salad. It tasted great, the courses were generous. The Filipino drink I ordered came in a long pint glass, a sweet-tasting dessert-style drink.

For £11 the meal was a great bargain for a quick lunch within 1 hour.
