Can you escape your past? That’s the question I found myself asking while watching Kevin Bacon’s You Should Have Left. Based on the novel by Daniel Kehlmann, You Should Have Left follows middle-aged Theo Conroy (Bacon) and his younger wife, Susanna (Amanda Seyfried), as they holiday at a remote but stylish home in Wales to revitalize their problematic marriage. Their six-year-old daughter, Ella (Avery Essex), is along for the ride. What should be a nice respite actually becomes a nightmarish reality as Theo’s jealous streak rears its ugly head, his past resurfaces and a supernatural force within the house delivers a chilling “you should have left” vibe.
Review: . You Should Have Left is a smart psychological thriller penned and directed by David Koepp. As a fan of Kevin Bacon, someone who we are all related to via six degrees of separation, it was good the see a 62-year-old leading a movie that appeals to the mature crowd. However, I would have liked to have seen him with an older co-star instead of 34-year-old Amanda Seyfried, but the plot calls for a younger actress. I definitely have to put this movie on my Halloween watchlist.
