Situated on the Tuscan coast, Carrara has provided artists with inspiration for millennia. The magnificent marble deposits of the area’s Apuan Alps, which create dramatic formations of white, blue and grey striated rocks, were quarried by the ancient Romans, and provided the stone for Michelangelo’s David – and now lend a unique aesthetic to the autumn/winter 2017 collection from renowned French couturier Leonard Paris.
Leonard is closely associated with its mastery of floral prints, but here designer Christine Phung translates the crystalline beauty of the Carrara rocks into a collection that perfectly captures their unique veins and delicate patterns. Dramatic blue and grey swirls of marble-like metallic colour cover a jacquard bomber jacket and fitted trousers.
The rocks appear in stylised form on a mink coat, worn with a short embroidered floral-inspired dress in silk crepe and muslin. They are more directly translated onto both a printed leather bag and the silk muslin shirt and grey metallic jacquard trousers that it accessorises.
Those same dramatic slices and smudges of colour appear across the Uber key chain, Ulysse handbag, Una card holder, Umberto key chain and Utopia handbag.
