Editor’s Notes: What else can be said about Awake NY that hasn’t been iterated a million times before? Angelo Baque’s ultra-hip apparel outfit is the very definition of “IYKYK” and yet its seasonal collections are remarkable approachable, bringing together Baque’s taste for street-leaning style and more sophisticated silhouettes.
Fall/Winter 2021, in particular, is especially high-minded, with lots of tailoring and overcoats seemingly inspired by easy outfits worn by The Jam and Style Council guitarist Paul Weller throughout the ’70s and ’80s.

Wear ’em big or size down for a trimmer cut, Awake NY doesn’t mind. The easy suit cuts are amplified by black-and-yellow houndstooth or made subdued by sober grey wool. Really, the wilder the pattern, the better: lots of Awake NY FW21 gear is exploding with pattern — patchwork bandana, shadow plaid, colorful squares — and graphics — embroidered dragons, stylized “NY” branding, a very souvenir “Living the Dream” design.

There are piece rendered in the colors of the Pan-African flag, one also printed with “LOVE, LIVE, LIFE” — or, “Live Laugh, Love,” as one Instagram commenter joked.
Interspersed between the oversized outerwear and easy hoodies are a few especially thoughtful pieces that recall Baque’s knack for creating dynamic Supreme pieces.
For instance, one iridescent green coaches is lined with faux fur — perhaps a direct reference as another commenter noticed — and a quarter-zip shirt printed with “Sweet Memory” makes good use of contrasting colors to highlight the zipper and pocket.
