If Ravi Dubey hadn’t failed in his engineering exams, he believes he probably wouldn’t have achieved his far-fetched dream – that of becoming an actor. As a child, he would enact movie scenes in front of the mirror, but becoming an actor was not something he ever envisioned. “I have been practicing Buddhism for 16 years now and one thing I have learned is that you can convert poison into medicine. If I hadn’t failed in engineering, I wouldn’t have come this far,” he says. (TMM)
The Jamai 2.0 star cracked his very first audition for a commercial and since then, there has been no looking back for this good-looking guy. “I’m living my dream,” says Ravi Dubey. Over to him…
There’s a variety of things you are doing – acting in fiction shows, reality series, hosting shows, and even producing films…
For creative people, monotony tends to set in very quickly. Three years ago, I decided not to engage in long term commitments. That’s what keeps me ticking. That is why the hosting happened after the fiction shows and now, the OTT platform happened with Jamai 2.0 and the production happened as well.
Jamai Raja came in 2014 and changed your life. This year, it’s Jamai 2.0 on an OTT platform. How have these experiences been?
Jamai Raja was a very, very loved show. Ravi Dubey said every time I mention it, I back it up with a lot of gratitude. It’s a lucky space for me. It comes and brings benefits and nourishment into my life. Just when I was thinking of engaging in the webspace, Jamai 2.0 happened. The love that came my way this time was many times more because the fans were waiting for the return. I had also decided to not do long term commitments, so it all just beautifully fit in. The show launched around midnight and I woke up in the morning to my Instagram and Twitter accounts is full of comments. People had binge-watched all 12 episodes in the night! I made a scrolling video of the comments that came from fans who had seen the show that goes to ten minutes straight! I want to thank them because it’s all because of the positive energy they have sent my way.
Are films the ultimate destination for you?
I think, more and more, one wants to sample all mediums. You want to express yourself as an actor. Whether its television, OTT platforms or films, none of them is the ultimate stage. Everything has value at different stages. I have sampled the web and I would love to do more work in that space. In the television space too, I would want to do associate myself more with the kind of work I do. I want to get into films as well. It’s a very concrete desire and I want to do content that I resonate with. I’ve never really had a plan or a strategy and have always relied more on the cosmic flow of things. I believe in a term called pre-gratitude. It’s about offering gratitude for things that have not yet happened. You feel closer to them, and the closer you feel, the closer they are.
You and your wife Sargun Mehta make for an adorable pair and the hashtag #couplegoals are often used for you. How does that make you feel?
It feels great. We are just being ourselves. Those who know us, know that we are exactly like this. I can’t keep my hands off her! (laughs) It just fills my heart when she is around. This year has been really busy for her as she is a superstar in the Punjab industry. I have seen her for a total of 20-22 days this whole year but it has just added so much value to our relationship.
