Living It Up: Ruhi Singh

Dreams don’t work unless you take action. The surest way to make your dreams come true is to live them. And that is what Ruhi Singh did, after winning the title of Femina Miss India, which helped her further bring glory home in form of Miss India Universal Peace and Humanity and then her first breakthrough in the world of cinema happened with Madhur Bhandarkar’s Calendar Girls, and rest, as they say, is history. In a conversation with TMM, she talks about her recent release Runaway Lugai, success in the world of glamour and what inspires her in life.

Your recent project ‘Runaway Lugai’ is gaining a lot of fame and appreciation from audiences. How does it feel and what’s next for you?
I’m grateful to my fans for welcoming ‘Runaway Lugai’ with so much love. The series is an MX Player comedy-drama directed by Avinash Das (who also directed Netflix’s ‘She’) and I’m glad the show has been received so well! People from all across India are messaging me because they loved my character, Bulbul, who is ambitious, confident, and bold. Since my role is also comically inclined, everybody is pleasantly surprised that I could play such a different character. There has been a lot of love and appreciation, ‘Runaway Lugai’ is topping the streaming charts and it feels amazing! Next up for me… I’m going to begin filming for a web series, a movie, and a very different project super soon. I’m excited!

How much has your life changed after becoming Miss India Universal Peace and Humanity?
My life has changed immensely because of Femina Miss India. It’s such a great platform. It has always been amazing to represent my country internationally in pageants. The amount of exposure I have received during such times and the way I grew as a human being because of those experiences is invaluable. I understood the world better; the actual meaning of unity and diversity. Meeting women from around the globe, who were representing their nations and their cultures, was also a very enriching experience. The whole world unites at these pageants and it’s amazing.

What do you do to keep yourself fit and glamorous?
The most important thing when it comes to fitness is consistency. Be true and honest to your routine. On some days, you might not feel like working out, and unless you’re ill, you should push yourself to go that extra mile for yourself. Be regular. Even if you want to have a calm and relaxing day, you can still do some exercises in by taking a 20-minute walk. The everyday effort that you put in, little by little, leads to great results and better well-being.

Tell us about your experience of working with director Madhur Bhandarkar while shooting ‘Calendar Girls’?
Starting my career with a film by a National Award-winning director was definitely a high point for me. He’s someone whose work I’ve always admired and appreciated. I had a phenomenal time working on ‘Calendar Girls.’ The movie marked my cinema debut and I learned a lot during the making of the film. Everything was so new and fresh. I cherished and enjoyed the process!

Who is your inspiration in life?
I’m inspired by changemakers around the world. Priyanka Chopra has been a great inspiration to me. One day, I aspire to make India as proud as she has, globally. I also really look up to Maharani Gayatri Devi, Kalpana Chawla, Michelle Obama and Marilyn Monroe. These women have used their power, knowledge, experience, privilege, and influence to make the world a better place.
