Living Side By Side: Home & Office for Fjord in Helsinki

Studio Joanna Laajisto, a Helsinki-based boutique design agency was founded in 2010. The company specialises in commercial interiors from retail and hospitality to workplace design as well as product and concept design.

Fjord in Helsinki, Finland managed by Studio Joanna Laajisto is the latest showcase office constructed to feel like a cosy home. When Fjord called upon Studio Joanna Laajisto to design their office, the brief was to create a new workplace playing with design elements and creative styles that would align with the firm’s vision and corporate branding, especially when the creative agency, Fjord often see fellow employees coming from around the world to the Helsinki office to sit down for casual meetings.

The office space has to be comfortable and reflects modern elegance, and the design process saw contemporary touches and striking furnishing integrated seamlessly into a large space. The designer has also crafted ample space in the living room to provide a soothing sanctuary fitted with tall windows to allow the flow of sunlight in to brighten up the floor.

This natural illumination enhances the spaces and matches well with carefully selected furnishing and materials within to provide maximum flexibility, encourage interaction and for creative ideas to flourish at each meeting.

Although the company focuses a lot on digital services and technology since both are the dominating factors in the modern world today, Laajisto was determined to go beyond the range of ideas and took into account to create hidden storage to hide cables and electrical wiring.

The look is further perfected with the exploration of the furniture arrangement in extended space to blend in with the colour palette. As seen in the picture above, the rooms are separated by full-height black metal frames instead of walls as partitions , so that the natural light that floods in has a freer movement than in a standard interior with separate rooms.

A lot of earthy elements were used throughout the design process from construction materials such as oak across 1,000 sqm flooring to the plentiful use of potted plants to achieve a nature-like surrounding along with the sisal carpets and linen curtains for colour contrasts.

Showcasing the kitchen/lounge with the feel of a ‘studio’ for staff to meet informally, relax, chat and dine together at the same time.

With proper space planning and the arrangement of furniture merging the concepts of fine living, the stylish office can be utilised in various versatile ways. Staff can also use their spare time for recreation and entertainment, or even casual hang-outs.

All of life’s comfort are met and social interactions can simply be expressed in such casual and wonderful environment. Indeed, the new ‘home office’ is now able to deliver a balance between work and pleasure and also encompass a nook for social reflections.
