Dr. Lucero Chueca was 5 years old when she knew she wanted to save lives. She remembers her uncle’s white doctor’s coat and wanting to accompany him to the hospital in Lima, Peru, where he would “heal people.” After Chueca completed her internal medical residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Michigan, the hospital hired her to foster medical students and residents. In 2012, she became board-certified in obesity medicine. Today, she’s a double board-certified internist and bariatric physician who splits her time between the Gardens Medical Group and Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center.
“I don’t believe in diets,” she says. “My goal is to create healthy options for my patients.”
She’s also passionate about teaching physical diagnosis to the next generation of doctors at Nova Southeastern University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine. A lot can be discovered during an examination, explains Chueca. Once, she caught leukemia in time by checking her patient’s enlarged spleen. He’s now on the path to recovery. “I love what I teach,” says Chueca. “And what you teach,
you learn.”
