It’s all fun and games with spirits, wine and beer but we all know nothing beats a truly fine cocktail – or several. You’ll find many often miss the mark; they’re either far too sweet – so all those ab crunches you spent a week doing were just an absolute waste of time; they taste too much of alcohol – hello, I ordered a refreshment not a death sentence! – or they just look plain hideous. Many in Bangkok are just an abomination to our eyes and tastebuds, leaving you so hungover the following day that simply the taste of all the bad decisions you made the night before lingers so much longer. You know you can’t dispute this one.
That’s why we’ve gone to extra heights to present you with cocktails that are downright heavenly, simply because they use the best of the best in ingredients, ahem, mostly champagne and the likes of it. It sounds snobbish, but don’t you want cocktails at their finest, that don’t leave you looking and feeling like a character from Dawn of the Dead the next day? Ok, Shaun of the Dead if it was a particularly funny night out. Have a look at what we’re drinking these days and see if there’s one you’d be keen to try on a fine night out.
The New Cuban
Park Hyatt Bangkok
Cocktail Bar of Penthouse Bar and Grill
THB380++
Ingredients:
- Diplomatico blanco
- Strawberry sake
- Lime juice
- Craft rhubarb syrup
- Sparkling Wine or Bollinger (upon request).
This gorgeous cocktail is the bar’s signature drink and two versions are offered: one with sparkling wine or an optional request can be made to have it with Bollinger Champagne. Well, we know which one we’d go for! The drink will give you sparkling and refreshing sips, as you’ll be able to taste hints of strawberry and rhubarb as well as additional floral touches that resonate so sweetly from the Japanese sake. The coriander leaves bring out interesting aromatic flavours too. This one’s easy to drink and is considered an aperitif style cocktail.
La Vie En Rose
Centara Grand at CentralWorld
CRU Champagne Bar
THB 1,400++
Ingredients:
- Absolut Raspberri
- Strawberry Purée
- Champagne
This one’s better than any Bellini you’ll ever have. Best news is you can mix and match between sips and glasses, champagne cocktail first, then champagne straight up, then back to the cocktail, until you finish the bottle. Share it with a friend though, obviously! You’ll be sure to reach further dizzying heights with this concoction, just in case you thought CRU Champagne Bar wasn’t high enough.
Classic Champagne Cocktail
The Dome & Lebua at State Tower
Flûte, A Perrier-Jouët Bar
THB 2,300++
Well, we had to include a Kir Royal somewhere so we thought we’d give you the Flûte version. This one is perfect if you’re looking for a real classic champagne with a literal and metaphorical cherry on the top. The beautiful champagne bar also serves up Bellinis and Mimosas too and honestly, they don’t get better anywhere else in Bangkok. With a view like that, you know you’re almost in heaven. These cocktails are of course made exclusively with Perrier-Jouët Grand Brut Champagne.
Capitan Jack Sparrow
The St. Regis Bangkok
The St. Regis Bar
THB 1,600
Ingredients:
- Malibu Rum
- Crème de Banana
- Fresh Passion fruit
- Mango Juice
- Garnish : Pineapple and Raspberry Aria (Foam)
- Top Champagne Moet & Chandon NV
- Vanilla Ice Cream on the side
The idea of this cocktail came from Johnnie Depp and his role in Pirates of the Caribbean. Already you should be picturing images of a beautiful lost island, you lying on the beach looking out at nice and crystal clear sea waters, rum from Havana and herbaceous banana trees. The cocktail itself is a beautiful blend of exotic mixed fruit, starting with passion fruit from Brazil that’s blended with the juice of mangoes from South East Asia, and finishing with Malibu rum. The whole concoction is refined with a hint of gentle Banana flavours and is topped with Moët & Chandon, just to give it an extra tartness. The cocktail tastes like heaven, being sweet and and fruity at the right points and is designed for people who want to have something different but not dissimilar to a Bellini.
Mona Lisa – Nat King Cole
The Mandarin Oriental Hotel
The Bamboo Bar
THB 520
- JW Gold Label
- Sipsmith Sloe Gin
- Marion Head Mead
- Roselle Syrup
- Peach Bitters
- Peychaud Bitters
The name Mona Lisa piqued our interest straight away but if we’re being honest, once we saw it came in a vintage goblet with a delicate pink flower sprig garnesh, we were sold. Mona Lisa was actually a song sung by Nat King Cole about the reason behind a lady’s smile. The complex but intense layers of flavours in this cocktail will suit many palates and for many different occasions too. Rich yet fresh, the cocktail is balanced by its berry flavors which come forward with sweet and sour notes. Having it in the delightful Bamboo Bar to the sound of live jazz just makes it that much more fine.
