Luxury watchmaker Longines launches year-long anniversary project “On this day”

Boasting a long and illustrious history, Longines is celebrating 185 years in 2017. To commemorate the milestone, the brand has embarked on a special project named “On this day”.  The project revisits Longines’ past to provide us with a detailed look into its journey from a small watchmaking company to one of the leading watch manufacturers.

Now known as a brand that prides itself in its horological creations, the 365 anecdotes — one released each day — track how the Swiss brand moved from a small workshop to the Longines factory that we have come to know today. One story that has been shared, is how the brand incorporated the hand-wound chronograph movement, calibre 13ZN, into its timepieces back in 1937.

First founded by Auguste Agassiz in 1832, Longines initially used the “établissage” system — where assembling the different components was divided into independent units before being pieced together. This allowed the watchmakers to work from home when the brand first began. More than three decades later, this system was changed by Ernest Francillon, nephew of Agassiz who had gradually taken over from his uncle, who moved watchmaking production under one roof at the Longines factory.

Though we have already entered into March, it is never too late to catch up on the anecdotes that have been released since the start of the year on their website. Now established in over 150 countries, the stories will be shared by Longines till the end of the project on December 31, 2017.
