Remember the stunning two-door Alfieri concept Maserati showcased back in 2014? Although it was originally planned to be produced in 2016, the Italian automaker has been delaying the production variant for what that seemed like forever.
Recently, Maserati boss Tim Kuniskis announced at FCA’s Capital Markets Day speech that the Maserati Alfieri is finally entering production.
The Maserati Alfieri will be an all-electric sports car, rivalling the upcoming Tesla Roadster. Maserati has no intentions to be discreet with its ambitions to directly lock horns with the American electric carmaker. “It may look like we are targeting Tesla: we are,” Maserati chief Tim Kuniskis said. “We are going to accomplish this by bringing to market something than no one in the industry can match.”
Maserati is going big on electrification—it plans to offer plug-in hybrid variants of all its models, plus all-electric versions of the Levante, Ghibli, Quattroporte, as well as the Alfieri.
In a presentation outlining the five-year plan for Maserati, the Alfieri will have a fully modular chassis with three “state-of-the-art powertrains, including plug-in hybrid”, according to Kuniskis. This all-electric version will use a three-motor drivetrain with all-wheel drive system offering torque vectoring. It will feature 800V battery technology.
Maserati also promises that the Alfieri will do 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in the two-second range and have a top speed beyond 186 mph. That performance will not only position the Alfieri as one of the fastest cars on the road, but also, on par with two rivalling all-electric supercars, the upcoming Rimac C_Two and Tesla Roadster.
Available as a convertible or coupe, the Alfieri will ride on a lightweight aluminum space frame platform, with some capacity of active aerodynamics.
There is no word on the pricing as of yet but the electric Maserati Alfieri should enter production by 2020. By 2022, there will be eight plug-in hybrid Maseratis on sale. Maserati will also replace the Ghibli by 2022, while all other models in the line-up will be updated with Level 3 autonomous tech.
