Melodious Gen-Next : Jaan Kumar Sanu
Stepping into the industry, we got to meet the successive generation of ‘Sanu’s’. Here is an insight into the dawn of romance-musical-legacy with Jaan Kumar Sanu
How did you take up to singing?
I got into singing by chance. Merely three years of age I learnt Lord Ganesha’s Aarti ‘Jai Ganesh, Jai Ganesh’. Even though I could hardly speak but voiced the melody. As an adolescent, I realised how much I was keen to learn further. With my father being a legendary singer, I consciously gained interest in singing.
What is special about your debut song?
My first track ‘Dil mera churaya kyu’ from the movie ‘Akele Hum Akele Tum’ is my version of one of my father’s greatest hits. It obviously is really close to my heart. The song was originally composed by Anu Malik sir, penned by Majrooh Sultanparui ji and voiced by my father Kumar Sanu. Thanks to Mr. Ratan Jain that the song was modernized and presented in the version. The special thing I would say is the chance to rewrite and recompose the song and present it to the world. It’s definitely a dream come true.
Who has been your idol?
Goes without saying, my father, Kumar Sanu is my idol. Apart from him, I have always look up to the four legendary singers Kishore Da, Rafi Sahab, Lata Ji and Asha Ji for inspiration. As a singer, I also look up to other singers, from each one of them I have something to learn from. Sonu Nigam, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Arijit Singh, KK, Shaan and Kailash Kher have motivated me to bring variations in my singing.
Any plans to enter Bollywood?
Talks are on with a few people, and few things are lined up. I shall be able to share it soon.
Which of your fathers’ songs are your favourite too?
There are three of my father’s songs which make it my list:
- Tere dar par sanam (Fir teri kahini yaad aayi) -“I saw him performing this on stage for the first time.”
- Dil mera churaya kyu (Akele hum akele tum)
- Do dil mil rahe hain (Pardes)
