The Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach will debut its largest presentation of Mexican modernist art to date with “Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and Mexican Modernism from the Jacques and Natasha Gelman Collection,” on view from October 23 through February 6. Works by Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, two of the movement’s icons, will center the exhibition, featuring 22 and 18 pieces by the artists, respectively.
Realism characterized by saturated, vibrant tones and mexicanidad, an admiration for Mexico’s Indigenous culture and folk art, leap off the artists’ canvases, each exploring expression through nature, home life, family, tradition, and examinations of the self. The works of fellow modernists Manuel and Lola Álvarez Bravo, Miguel Covarrubias, Nickolas Muray, Graciela Iturbide, María Izquierdo, Carlos Mérida, José Clemente Orozco, David Alfaro Siqueiros, Juan Soriano, and Rufino Tamayo will also be on display. Grouping the artists together celebrates the movement as it was intended: as a collaborative arts community.
Tickets to the exhibition are available now.
