Today Michelin unveiled the greatly anticipated Michelin Guide Great Britain & Ireland 2018, bringing to light the most outstanding restaurants across the UK. While a total of 2,067 restaurants have been given a place in the guide, it’s the newest additions to the Michelin guide that the spotlight inevitably falls on.
Of particular note is the Araki in London, which now has the prestigious accolade of three Michelin stars, making it the first Japanese restaurant to ever be attain three stars in the UK. This features alongside the now two-Michelin-starred dining spot Claude Bosi at Bibendum, one of 20 two-Michelin-starred restaurants in the guide, and an array of restaurants that have been awarded their first Michelin star.
Of the 150 restaurants to have been recognized with one Michelin star, 17 are new additions to the 2018 guide. London continues to prove its culinary status with the newly awarded restaurant A.Wong, which places the focus on contemporary Cantonese cooking, La Dame de Pic, the French restaurant at Ten Trinity Square, Nordic dining spot Aquavit, and the two Indian restaurants Jamavar and Vineet Bhatia.
Elsewhere in the UK, the attention is drawn to the now Michelin-starred pub, the Wild Honey Inn in Ireland, and of the Michelin-starred restaurants in Scotland, Loch Bay on the Isle of Skye is one that’s new to the 2018 collection.
Additional new Michelin-starred restaurants across the UK include Paco Tapas in Bristol, Tom Kerridge’s pub the Coach in Marlow, the Latymer in Surrey and Coworth Park in Ascot. The already Michelin-starred chef Michael Caines earned a star for Lympstone Manor in Devon, and chef Niall Keating has made his mark by earning a star for Whatley Manor in Wiltshire.
Commenting on the 2018 guide’s highest addition, the Araki in London, the international director of the Michelin guides, Michael Ellis, says: “With its nine-seater counter, The Araki has gone from strength to strength. When Mitsuhiro Araki moved to London from Tokyo in 2014 he set himself the challenge of using largely European fish and his sushi is now simply sublime.”
The Michelin Guide for Great Britain & Ireland 2018 is published on the same day as the 2018 edition of the Michelin Guide London.
