Celebrating their 100th Anniversary, Mido, probably the only watch brand in the world to draw muse directly from architecture, chose Singapore’s ArtScience Museum at Marina Bay Sands as their inspiration for their latest collection. Designed by the architect Moshe Safdie, an Israeli-Canadian architect and urban designer, most recognised for his seminal work – Habitat 67, pioneering three-dimensional prefabricated “lego block” units, conceptualised the Singapore ArtScience Museum to be reminiscent of a lotus flower; it’s a design which Las Vegas Sands chairman Sheldon Adelson refers to as “The Welcoming Hand of Singapore”. For 2018, the brand’s 100th birthday, the red dot’s most iconic structure inspires the Mido Rainflower.
Celebrating Mido 100th Anniversary: The Rainflower
With its white “petals” open to the Singapore sky, the ArtScience Museum appears to float upon the Singapore river from certain angles; Mido’s Rainflower takes the lotus shape and resolutely modern design of the iconic Marina Bay building for inspiration for the Rainflower collection.
Built during the turn of the millennium, the ArtScience Museum harnesses eco-friendly ideas like collecting rainwater on the collection of the roof for re-cycling and re-use. With sustainability forming the central thesis of one of Singapore’s architectural icons, we find allegory in the eternal elegance of mechanical timekeeping like Mido’s Rainflower.
Interestingly, the Rainflower is also part of an international #CreateYourMido participative campaign. Headlined by the beautiful Romee Strijd, Victoria’s Secret model and first participant in the custom Mido Rainflower campaign, Striid wore a Rainflower of her own design during the event. Striid’s special Rainflower was created with the web application, a glittering, refined model with white, grained-finish dial set with three green tsavorites at 3, 9 and 12 o’clock and a rose-gold PVD steel case. Romee Striid’s watch will be produced in a limited edition of 500 pieces, and will be available, like the rest of the collection, from May 2019.
