Revered for centuries in Japan and China, these fish can be worth more than most people. They are generally kept for decorative purposes in outdoor koi ponds or aquariums and their colors can range from white, black, red, orange, yellow, blue, and cream. Koi have been known to live for 25 to 30 years. They can be cheap, though if they are a rare type, they can be extremely expensive. The Most Expensive Koi is also the Most Expensive Fish ever sold.
Although they have now been introduced into the wild in every continent other than Antarctica, a high quality Koi fish can sell for an amazing amount of money.
The Most Expensive Koi Fish
The most expensive koi fish ever sold, wa sold at auction in Japan for an incredible $US1.8 million. This was almost 4 times the previous record.
At just over 1 meter long (3ft, the red and white fish was purchased by a Taiwanese collector. The female Koi, named ‘S Legend’, is a Kohaku variety and is one of the most recognizable species among the many varieties that exist.
As a 9 year old female, that can live up to 25 years, there will be the opportunity for the fish to breed. Koi can produce up to 500,000 eggs, though many won’t be of the highest quality ( perhaps they are delicious?).
