When a fellow blogger friend Manjiri from travelsfortaste.com invites you to a travel event to taste delicious Greek honey. You just can’t say no. The Mount Athos event was held out Cactus Studios, yes the very one that films “The Saturday Kitchen”.
Since I was the first person to arrive I got to chat to the people representing Mount Athos. They showed me booklets filled with stunning sandy beaches, coastlines of crystal clear sea, with gradient lines of different shades of blue stand out.
Mont Athos is not often a place people go on holidays, the holy mountains in the north part of Greece where thousands of monks live is part of a world heritage site and is forbidden to women. Only a number of visitors are allowed to the actual mountains. However Mount Athos still has plenty to offer, with 61 beaches along the 300 km coastlines, walks where the ancient philosopher Aristotle was born. Hike up the mountains in the natural beauty areas of Halkidki.
Beekeeper and greek honey
A professional beekeeper Mara flew from Greece especially for the event showed us a demonstration on how she collects honey from the bees. No bees were actually there with Mara, but we got to see the pure chunks of the honeycomb with crystal clear runny honey dripping from it.
Once the demonstration finished we enjoyed tasty homemade snacks and desserts created in the kitchen by holiday makers from Mount Athos. Almond honey cookies, freshly hot sticky fried Loukoumades (Greek Doughnuts), sweet honey on feta cheese.
A big fat Greek feast
The evening then ended with the announcement of 4 lucky people winning a trip to Mount Athos for next May and a big fat Greek feast to take us on a gastronomy journey of Greek food. Bright colourful food, and a room filled with warm welcomes from the people in Greece.
