Mustard Restaurant – Utterly delicious best of British

The long stretch of Shepard Bush road is somewhere I walk past almost every day. From morning to afternoon and after work hours I wander up and down the road from Monday to Friday. Along the cafes, hairdressers, restaurants lies the former Café Rogue now with Mustard restaurant residing.

 

The people behind Mustard restuarant are Lawrence Hartley and Tim Healy the owners of Joe Allen Covent Garden. They plan to open up a collection of British brassieres under the Mustard brand throughout London.

Mustard Restaurant in Brook Green has been on the list to try since I watched in anticipation of the site being renovated and it’s only down the road from work in Brook Green. I was happy to be invited down to lunch at Mustard.

 

Most of the former Café Rouge interior exists with the same table format. Classier lighting and muted colours used. Mustard is open from 9am serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. The set menu is great value at £10.95, a la carte ranges from £9.95 to £20.

We shared one of Mustard house wine between us. The wines are specially made for Mustard from Sicily is 100% organic. Pinot Grigio £17.50 was incredibly smooth and light.

To start we ordered Devonshire crab salad and lightly fried Cornish quid. The starters were a meal in itself. Big portions with plenty of high quality ingredients and great value for the £6-8 mark.

My salad had plenty of leafy greens and sweet crabmeat dressed in a light tangy sauce. Crab has proven to be a true taste of marine finest.

Lightly fried Cornish squid

Meanwhile the lightly battered fried squid piled high in the parchment paper. Crisp thin batter lightly seasoned to enhance the natural flavours; of course, it was made to dunk into the tartar sauce.

Moving onto the mains, we opted for the red meats. Lamb hot pot surprised us coming in a big bowl of broth, tender chunks of lamb meat, freshly ripped mint leaves, pea shoots, broad and runner beans with a side of cream potatoes.

My braised beef cheek, came in a small iron stove pot. Cooked in boozy ale, the Scottish beef cheek fell off easier. So tender, and full of flavour that melts in your mouth. Underneath, glazed carrots and horseradish. Both mains were served with the creamiest mashed potatoes, perfect balance and consistency.

We finished our lunch with desserts. Flourless chocolate cake and the almond blood orange cake. Sliced to the perfect triangle, both were light in texture. My almond and blood orange tasted similar to Japanese cheesecake, blood orange is very prominent.

Flourless chocolate cake had enough cocoa content to satisfy the chocolate lover. Mustard Restaurant ticked all the boxes for me, all the food I tried tasted amazing. It is incredible in value for a brassiere and used high-quality ingredients. I highly recommend venturing to Shepard’s Bush to give it a try.
