I’ve always been a bit beauty obsessed. I remember watching my mom put her makeup on in the mornings, mesmerized by her seemingly effortless routine. When I would have my makeup done for photo shoots or splurge on a facial, I would ask the makeup artist and esthetician endless questions so that I could learn from the pros, to then emulate back at home.
Today, after years of learning from the pros (and my own personal trial and error) I have an arsenal of beauty tricks and tips that make my beauty regimen pretty stress-free. Here are 10 of my beauty tips and tricks that usually save my day(s).
- If I am feeling a little tired after a long night or a long flight, I use white eyeliner on my bottom lash line, which makes the whites of my eyes look lighter and brighter.
- Speaking of tired eyes, a common symptom of sleepless nights are dreaded dark circles. A quick remedy to alleviate puffiness and darkness under the eyes are brewed green tea bags. Loaded with antioxidants and plenty of tannins, green tea bags shrink swelling and reduce the fluids around the eyes. Chill them in the freezer and lay on your eyes for 10 minutes. You’ll see a noticeable difference immediately.
- Before I curl my eyelashes, I always heat my eyelash curler with a blowdryer. Similar to heating your curling iron to curl your hair; a heated tool will create a curl much more effectively that an unheated tool.
- I love thick brows, but they can get a little unruly when growing out. To tame, I spray hairspray on an old toothbrush, and brush them upward and outward for a done “undone” look.
- For an easy, “no makeup makeup look”, I tint my eyelashes at the salon, which mitigates the need to wear mascara on days you want to give your skin a break.
- This leads to my next trick — letting my skin breath. I try to go makeup-free at least one day a week. On these days, usually on the weekends, I put on a SPF moisturizer and chapstick and let my skin have a well-deserved break.
- Blemishes. We all get them from time to time, unfortunately. I like to create my own pimple cream out of aspirin and water. Crush one aspirin tablet with a spoon, add a little water, and make a paste. Apply to the blemish for 20 minutes. This takes down swelling and redness without drying the skin out.
- When my lips and dry and chapped, or I want my lipstick to go on smoother, I exfoliate. Making your own exfoliator is easy, all you need is brown sugar and honey. Mix a tablespoon of brown sugar with a little honey (or coconut oil), and scrub on your lips for 2 minutes. This takes off dead skin and makes your lips so incredibly smooth (and kissable.)
- When I am rushing out of the house but my freshly painted nails are not quite dry, I dip my hands in ice cold water 3 minutes, which makes the polish dry quickly.
- Most people are surprised to hear that I never wash my face in the morning. I skip morning cleansing because washing your face in the morning can strip your natural defense barrier, a layer of helpful oils produced overnight which keeps skin soft and youthful.
