It’s no secret that adidas is planning to relaunch the NMD in some way next year. Still, the upcoming NEIGHBORHOOD NMD R1 collaboration took several people by surprise when it was teased by the brand’s founder, Shinsuke Takizawa, on Instagram.
The sneaker, which enjoyed its peak popularity in 2016 and 2017, remains true to the OG. That means a synthetic, knitted upper with a sock-like fit and Three Stripes branding sits atop a Boost midsole that features rubber stabilizers at the forefoot and heel. The upper is all black with a paisley pattern, while the midsole’s color blocking is split. The heel is black, while the Boost at the forefoot features a pre-yellowed effect.

It’s the first time such a pre-aged, yellowing effect has been used on a Boost midsole, which is noteworthy because the yellowing of old or worn Boost was one of the biggest criticisms of the technology when it was first released nearly a decade ago. It’s eye-catching, albeit an odd choice, to say the least.
According to Shinsuke San, the NEIGHBORHOOD x adidas NMD R1 will be released on January 2.
Earlier this year, adidas seeded 100 friends and family with the new version of its NMD, dubbed the NMD S1. It quickly became clear that adidas was planning on reviving the series with new and updated designs. The fact that adidas has now teamed up with NEIGHBORHOOD on the OG, is confirmation that we’ll see the original NMD in new (and perhaps old) colorways.
