Boeing pulled back the curtain for its newest jetliner, the 737 Max 9, the largest single-aisle aircraft in its 737 MAX series, with a range for transatlantic flights. Scheduled to enter service next year, the aircraft has a range of 6,510 km or 3,515 nautical miles.
Boeing claims that represents 600 mi or 1,100 km more than its competitor without additional fuel tanks, at a lower seat cost for airlines. For comparison, the Airbus 321neo has a range of 6,850 km with Sharklets, a specialised wingtip used on the A320 series.
Compared to its older sibling, the 737 MAX 8, the newer Boeing aircraft also has an additional 16 seats, for a maximum capacity of 220 passengers. Airlines that have already placed orders for the 737 MAX 9 include Air Canada, United Airlines, Icelandair, Alaska Airlines, WestJet and Turkish Airlines. The MAX 8 is set to be delivered this year, while the smaller MAX 7 and higher capacity MAX 200 are expected to roll out in 2019.
Meanwhile, Boeing also offered new details on the development of its next 737 MAX aircraft in a company blog post. The 737 MAX 10X, a direct response to the A321neo, offers the same capacity but with lower costs and more range, and would enter into service in 2020. Randy Tinseth, Vice President of Marketing at Boeing wrote, “[The] 737 MAX 10X would be the most profitable single-aisle airplane the industry has ever seen.”
