To celebrate its 100th anniversary celebrations, Mido is launching the Commander Big Date. A unique timepiece designed to commemorate its grand date with an exceptional grand date complication.
This new watch adopts the codes that have given the Commander its unique identity: a sunray satin-finished dial, protected by an elegant round case in satin-finished stainless steel and enhanced by a polished bezel. Interestingly, the Mido Commander collection follows a few decades after the Multifort and has been produced without interruption till today.
New Watch: Mido Commander Big Date, Celebrating 100 Years of Mido
Since its creation in 1918, “I measure” in Spanish, the brand has looked towards the future and with the Mido Commander Big Date, the Swatch Group brand has found a worthy flagbearer. The Commander Big Date bears a new calibre built upon the foundational Mido Calibre 80 in order to incorporate the large date complication.
It bears stating that large date or grand date complications are exceedingly rare for mechanical watches at this price point – especially when you consider that the biggest proponents and makers of this complication are Glashutte Original and A. Lange & Sohne.
The Swiss automatic Mido calibre 80, itself, a modified ETA C07.651 with 80 hours power reserve features an ELINFLEX mainspring and an ELINCHRON II balance-spring. As befits Mido’s 100th anniversary but in keeping with an attractive price proposition first-and-foremost, the calibre 80 is a finely decorated Elaboré-grade (the grades being Standard, Elaboré, Top, and Chronometre) movement, rotor decorated with Geneva stripes and adjusted to 3 different positions for high accuracy.
Aesthetically, the Mido Commander Big Date is also a fair bit cleaner than its earlier editions and also enjoys a tad more symmetry, thanks to the presence of the big date at 6 o’clock rather than the typical date aperture at 3 o’clock.
The 42mm Mido Commander Big Date displays time via hands pointing to baton-shaped indexes enhanced with a strip white Super-LumiNova. The second most noteworthy feature apart from the date is the Commander Big Date’s domed sapphire crystal tapered down to meet a faceted rim of the dial, adding some nice depth to the affordable dress watch.
