New York’s 2021 Michelin-Star Restaurants Revealed

Fourteen months on from the city’s first indoor hospitality shutdown, the New York Michelin Guide for 2021 has been announced — just in time for full capacity restrictions lifting on May 19.

And in a year that seemingly everything changed, two things remained the same; with no movement in New York’s three-Michelin-star category for the third year running and no new additions to the two-star category this year either. Though this is hardly surprising. No US city’s restaurants have felt the pandemic quite so acutely as New York; like its yellow cabs and Central Park, its diverse dining scene is an essential part of its DNA. It is estimated that approximately 1,000 New York eateries closed for good in 2020 and those withstanding having to radically adapt and considerably scale back.

Despite the trials and tribulations, New York’s one-Michelin-star category is shining bright with seven new selections: Don Angie by Angie Rito and Scott Tacinelli; Francie by Chris Cipollone; Jua by Hoyoung Kim; Kochi by Sungchul Shim; Rezdôra by Stefano Secchi; Tsukimi by Takanori Akiyama; and Vestry by Shaun Hergatt.

Michelin Green Star Award

Another notable selection came as two-Michelin-star-eatery Blue Hill at Stone Barns, led by chef Dan Barber, became the first New York restaurant to be awarded the new Michelin Green Star. Introduced in January 2020 with the Michelin Guide France, the Michelin Green Star recognizes restaurants with a high commitment to sustainable gastronomy and environmental protection. Michelin Guide international director Gwendal Poullennec commended the farm-to-table restaurant located 30 miles north of Manhattan in Pocantico Hills for its  “unwavering commitment to sustainable gastronomy.” Chef Barber and his team work closely with local producers and fishermen to ethically source the freshest ingredients.
