No. 5 Wine Bar Now Serving Madeira 1675 By the Glass

Toulouse’s No. 5 Wine Bar, 2016 winners of the Best Wine Bar in Europe, has recently added to its award-winning wine list. Increasing their stock from 15,000 to 18,000 bottles, owners Thomas and Anne Cabrol are now serving 3,200 different wines, with 700 new labels having been added.

Another feature is the increase in wines by the glass, where an impressive 300 interesting wines and old vintages are now available as single pours. This includes what is surely one of the world’s oldest wines by the glass: a 1675 Madeira. It was recovered from a ship that sank off the coast of Holland in February 1735 with 256 crew on board. The shipwreck was  discovered in 1982, when its contents—thousands of gold and silver coins and crates of wine—were retrieved. The wine that was able to be salvaged was given new seals and many are displayed in museums, such as the maritime museum in the Dutch town of Vissingen. A maritime museum is where No. 5 acquired its bottles.

The renowned vintage comes alongside many other very old and legendary vintages poured by the glass, including 1961, 1966, 1975, 1982, 1989, 1990, and 2000. Among the iconic wines now being served by glass are Petrus, Haut-Brion, Mouton Rothschild, Latour, Lafite, Yquem, Romanée-Conti, and Vega Sicilia, to name only a few.
