This past summer brought a record-breaking year for sea turtle nests on Palm Beach County shores: Loggerhead Marinelife Center logged 20,998 nests across 9.5 miles of beaches, which translates to more than 1.3 million estimated hatchlings.
Local diners can support the rebounding sea turtle population during No Straw November—and every month—by ditching the straws in their drinks or by opting to use alternatives, such as paper, bamboo, metal, or glass straws.
At Hog Snappers, a longstanding seafood joint in Tequesta, cocktails arrive sans straw or with Hay! Straws, made from wheat stems. The initiative to remove as much single-use plastic as possible represents just one of the restaurant’s green measures. In addition to featuring local, sustainable catches on its menu, Hog Snappers also serves Lionfish, an increasingly invasive species disrupting Atlantic waters, in the form of ceviche, sushi, and sashimi. Those who may be hesitant to try it, rest assured—it’s divine.
Another way to help our beloved turtles: head to Hog Snappers for Sunday brunch this month. During November, Hog Snappers is donating 10 percent of proceeds from its Sunday Brunch to Loggerhead Marinelife Center.
Stop in for crabcake or lobster eggs benedict and tropical French toast paired with bottomless mimosas, mojitos, or a seasonal sip like a pumpkin white Russian. Or, if you’re veering toward lunch, the seafood gumbo—packed with fish, shrimp, mussels, and clams—with coconut rice is a winning combo, as are any of the sushi rolls. And, definitely don’t skip dessert. We recommend the heavenly, silky smooth coconut cream pie, a scoop of Proper Ice Cream, or better yet, both.
Each month, Hog Snappers facilitates a different nonprofit organization’s mission by donating from its Sunday Brunch sales. Last year the restaurant gave more than $10,000 to charities.
