Old Chang Kee – Curry Puffs

Old Chang Kee

Old Chang Kee

Old Chang Kee has made its way to London. Hailed from Singapore the famous curry puffs started out in a small coffee stall in 1956. Rapidly growing through the decades and opening shops worldwide. The location of Old Chang Kee is in Covent Garden New Row. The exterior is painted yellow outside with the black logo. There’s limited seating inside but great for those who want to sit in and try their curries or noodle dishes. Puffs and snacks can be seen in the heated cabinet, skewers of fish balls, lobster balls, spring rolls and of course the puff pastries. Price ranges from £1.50 for the skewers whilst the puff pastries are from £2.30.

Old Chang Kee curry puffs

Signature curry puffs were sold out, so I had to make do with Singapore chilli crabstick puffs. Lobster balls were tasty, reminding me of my visits at the hawker stalls in Hong Kong. Instead of being boiled these are oven, slab on the chilli sauce for a little kick.

The puff pastry, on the other hand, has a thick encasing of pastry; some of the outer layer crust had fallen apart. It did taste dry from being in the heated cabinet for way too long but the filling inside made up for it. Finely minced real crabmeat and imitation crabsticks are merged together in chilli and tomato-based sauce. It only made me want to try a real Singaporean Chilli crab dish even more.
