Optical Illusion Moiré Patterns

Artist Anoka Faruqee has painted an impressive series of Moire Patterns that produce beautiful optical illusions. Using a notched, comblike trowel, she creates abstract lines that overlap and produce interesting patterns on linen panels. Faruqee also uses luminous acrylic colours that blend well together. She paints each pattern meticulously with special attention to the unique optical illusion produced. The paths of paint follow purposeful arrangements through which the eye will wander. Faruqee avoids perfection in the patterns, allowing a slip of the hand or an untaped edge to create unique flaws within the final product. The Artist explains, “While optical painters have sometimes eliminated such ‘imperfections’ as visual distractions, these physical ‘slips’ can rather augment the optical when used pointedly.” Learn more about Faruqee and her works here
