Phinisi Silolona’s Sheer Ambience

Phinisi Silolona’s Sheer Ambience

Readers perusing the annual Charter Focus in this issue of Yacht Style will find anything from traditional Indonesian phinisis to the largest and latest superyachts offered at US$660,000 a week. Our waters extend from the Indian Ocean’s Seychelles, Mauritius and Maldives to the exotic seas and straits of Asia and the vast Pacific as far as French Polynesia, with superb attractions like Australia and New Zealand in between.

A few luxuriously outfitted phinisis are offered in Southeast Asian waters, and here we look at one of the favourites, Silolona. Phinisis were the inter-island trading vessels of the Indonesian archipelago, by far the world’s largest, and indeed they still exist in commercial roles, lining up at Jakarta’s Sunda Kelapa to discharge cargoes. “Bugis boats” was the old terminology.

But Silolona is an entirely different luxury phinisi based in Bali for voyages to exotic eastern isles like Komodo and Flores, Raja Ampat, and as far as the legendary Banda Spice Isles. When the monsoon changes, as it does every year, the vessel moves to Phuket, and can be found from Malaysia’s West Coast tourist isles like Penang and Langkawi to the azure Andaman Sea and beyond to Burma’s far south Mergui archipelago.

It is a different experience, but a very rewarding one. Making passage on a phinisi should be on everyone’s bucket list.
