Powdery pastels are the very quintessence of spring, and this year they’re having something of a renaissance. Delicate shades were blooming on runways across the four fashion capitals at Spring 2014 Fashion Month, including fresh greens at Giorgio Armani, sky blues at Badgley Mischka and Prada, soft violets at Rochas, and surprisingly flattering petal-pink washes at Burberry.
Pastels are a fun way of adding a touch of color to your look, but there are a few things you need to keep in mind when applying them. Whether they are matte or pearly, finely milled pale-colored eyeshadows can collect in fine lines and make lids appear unflatteringly ashy. Remember to apply a good primer before your shadow to prevent this and to give the truest color possible. What’s more, these colors are not the easiest to pull off, especially if you go for a graphic or blocky application. Instead, try delicate washes of color applied using a larger, fluffy brush for a softer finish. Balance out sugar-sweet hues with a chic flick of retro black liquid liner and lashings of volumizing mascara that will add definition and pop against chalky lids.
