Priyaank Sharma Words: Deepali Singh
TMM | There was no particular moment that Priyaank Sharma recalls where he realised he wanted to be an actor – it’s just something he has always wanted. Growing up with his actress mother Padmini Kolhapure and producer dad Pradeep Sharma, it’s not surprising that the young boy harboured dreams of being in the movies. But far from leaning on his lineage, Priyaank has worked hard to be on the big screen. His debut film Sab Kushal Mangal released just a few days ago and the newcomer can’t wait to see what the New Year brings him.
Priyaank Sharma it seems you have always been serious about getting into the acting profession. You even took acting lessons.
Well, I have wanted to become an actor since I was a child. It was an organic journey. My parents always told me about the cons of the professions and that there is much more to acting than just the acting part. When they understood where I am coming from and that I am serious about it, they supported me. And yes, I have been at it! (laughs) In school, I took part in dramatics. Then I went to The Lee Strasberg Film and Theatre Institute in New York for an acting course. Post my return, I did a couple of theatre workshops and even acted in a play written by Gulzar saab. Then I assisted Raj Kumar Santoshi sir for two years, including on the movie Phata Poster Nikla Hero. Then I kept meeting people and waiting for the right script. Aur uske baad sab kushal mangal ho gaya! (smiles)
Your cousins Shraddha and Siddhant are also actors. Did they give you any tips?
Our family is really close and we make it a point to meet at least once a week. The only thing everyone told me was that this is your journey. As for the acting bit, they said you have to be true to yourself and to be spontaneous. But the main thing everyone said is to just enjoy the journey and to have fun.
Most newcomers make their debut with romance or action, but you chose comedy…
There was an action film I was going to do and had even started training for it. There was also an out and out romantic film I had liked. But as soon as I heard this, I knew it was the one. It’s such a sweet world with a good ensemble cast. I was getting a chance to be in a film which had Akshaye Khanna in a parallel role and I couldn’t have asked for anything better.
Akshaye Khanna is known for his comic timing. What did you learn from him?
His character in Sab Kushal Mangal is epic! I still remember the first day he showed up in his look and the whole set stood up! He’s just so cool. I can’t put in words what just being around him, observing him, meant to me. He’s nothing less than an elder brother to me now. I think I have grown as an actor just being around him.
What’s the kind of cinema you enjoy and see yourself doing? Who inspires you?
I’m a complete movie baby and can watch four films a day! I watch all kinds of movies and genres. I want to try different spaces. It has to excite and challenge me. As for actors, I love everyone! I have had different phases. At the moment, my Ranveer Singh phase is going on. But everyone is good at what they are doing and it’s so inspiring and motivating to see their journeys.
What’s the real Priyaank like?
I’m a massive foodie! Going on a diet is damn tough for me (laughs). I’m happy with my set of friends, most of whom aren’t from the industry. I like spending time with my family. Having a cup of tea with my mum and dad in the mornings is special to me. That’s our time together.
Single?
Yes… and no! (laughs)
