Q&A with Jewelry Designer Marco Bicego

Luxury jewelry designer Marco Bicego will be making a personal appearance at Saks Fifth Avenue in Palm Beach Gardens on Friday, October 21, where shoppers will be able to meet him, browse his newest collections, and enjoy personalized engraving on their purchases.

The designer, who began training as a gold artisan at his father’s 50-year-old atelier in the Veneto region of Italy, launched his jewelry line in 2000. The creative entrepreneur blends old-world Italian hand craftsmanship with artistic imagination to create timeless pieces that can be worn as both everyday and statement pieces.

PBI.com had a chance to chat with Bicego about the inspiration behind his latest collection, Masai, which was inspired by the ornaments of the African Masai tribe and features delicate pieces crafted in 18k gold strands that customers will be able to browse at Saks on October 21.

PBI.com: How would you describe your signature jewelry style?

Bicego: It’s modern, contemporary jewelry for every day. It’s very versatile – you can layer it, mix and match different pieces, or wear them alone.

Where do you find inspiration for your themes and designs?

My inspiration comes from a lot of things, but mostly from nature. I’m very connected with nature and love the perfection and imperfection that can be found in its designs – everything looks one-of-a-kind, and I try to put those designs in my jewelry.

How did you create Masai?

I bought a book a couple years ago and one day, I was looking through it and saw the tribe’s big, beautiful necklaces, and that’s where I first got the inspiration. Then it was a challenge of how to bring that design inspiration and incorporate it into a recognizable piece of Marco Bicego jewelry. It was definitely not easy, but I’m finally really happy with the collection; it’s been doing very well. I’ve never been on an African safari myself, but I’d definitely like to go to Kenya.
