Qantas to enforce stricter dress code for lounges

Qantas lounge

has enforced a stricter dress code at its airport lounges following complaints from passengers.

That means that frequent flyers accustomed to wearing boardshorts, rubber thongs and tank tops on Australia’s flagship carrier will have to rethink their travel attire if they want to visit the Qantas Clubs and business lounges across the country, reported The Sydney Morning Herald.

“Entry may be refused at the discretion of the lounge staff if visitors do not meet the appropriate standard […] we want to create a comfortable atmosphere in our lounges that all visitors can enjoy.”

Because apparently for some flyers, seeing fellow travelers dressed for the beach rather than an upscale lounge reserved for loyalty members — often business travelers — makes them uncomfortable.

The dress code will take effect April 1 at Qantas Clubs and business lounges in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Canberra and Adelaide.

Flyers will be assessed individually, the airline added, meaning that tailored shorts would be permissible versus boardshorts.

Experts have long advised travelers to dress up for their flight, as a passenger’s attire can increase their odds of being upgraded.
