Stuck in his ways. Bachelorette alum Rachel Lindsay doesn’t think fellow alum Becca Kufrin‘s ex-fiancé Garrett Yrigoyen can “change” after he showed support for police officers amid Black Lives Matter protests in June.
“I think it’s a sad day when I don’t think people can change. Right? Some people, they never will,” the former Bachelor contestant, 35, told Us Weekly on August 28. “And you know, it’s like the ‘fool me once shame on you fool me twice, shame on me’ situation. So you’re not going to fool me twice.”
Garrett, 31, garnered negative attention when he made a lengthy Instagram post about the Thin Blue Line amid national protests against racial injustice and police brutality in June. In the days following the post, Rachel and Becca, 30, spoke about the implications of Garrett’s choice on their “Bachelor Happy Hour” podcast — and Rachel noted this wasn’t an “isolated incident” with Becca’s fiancé.
In 2018, Garrett apologized for “liking” memes that mocked the transgender community, immigrants and survivors of the Parkland shooting, among other minority groups. He owned up to his actions during the live After the Final Rose special where he got engaged to Becca.
“He’s a very nice guy,” Rachel further explained to Us Weekly. “But what I also realize is their relationship hadn’t been tested. And then you have what happened with the pandemic, with Black Lives Matter. And you’re seeing a lot of people’s true colors come out.”
Ultimately, it seems she feels the Bachelorette winner isn’t interested in learning from his mistakes. “Some people are recognizing their ignorance and are wanting to change, and some people are wanting, are doubling down and wanting to stay in their ways,” Rachel added. “Garrett is a person who has doubled down. So to me, no, he’s not willing to change and it honestly kind of shows he never did.”
Becca initially stood by her fiancé’s side when he received backlash in June — but she soon switched sides on the incident. She apologized to Rachel for Garrett’s behavior on their podcast shortly following the post. “For those who are curious about my relationship with Garrett at this point, all I can say right now is I don’t know,” she told fans at the time. The pair have since seemingly split, though it is unclear when the breakup went down.
