With Bonhams Fine and Rare Wine and Whisky auction coming up on 18 May, we were invited to a special tasting at auction house HQ. While we certainly sipped our way through some spectacular iterations, the stars of the show, however, were never even poured. On display were the Macallan Peter Blake 1926 and the Macallan Valerio Adami 1926, both of which will headline the upcoming auction.
Only 12 of each were ever bottled, back in 1986, making them a collectors favourite as they go on the block. The remarkably high value (estimates are set at HK$3.6-$4.6 million) is due to the market rarity of the 24 bottles as well as the unique label designs. Sir Peter Blake and Valerio Adami, two of the 20th century’s most renowned pop artists – Blake is most famous for his design of the Beatles Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart Club Band album cover, while Adami, a man who often combined politics and art, is known for inventing his own style of painting similar to French cloisonnism – were commissioned by Macallan to add their own unique imprint to the two dozen bottles.
Bonhams Head of Fine Wine and Whisky in Hong Kong Daniel Lam says, “We are delighted to feature the rarest Macallan in our upcoming May auction, which offers a once-in-a-generation opportunity for collectors to acquire the Holy Grail of Macallan alongside an exceptional depth and breadth wines and whiskies.”
