REAL Kombucha beginnings
Dry January may be over for some, but I have not touched alcohol for over 3 years due to health reasons. REAL Kombucha had reached out to me to review two of their non-alcoholic sparkling fermented teas, Royal Flush and Dry Dragon. Just like founder David Begg, who gave up drinking, a foodie missed pairing great wine with great food. Once a friend introduced him to some kombucha, he started creating his own sparkling fermented kombucha tea.
Their sparkling fermented tea is also served at top restaurants like DINNER Heston Blumenthal, HAKKASAN Alan Yau, LUCKY CAT Gordon Ramsay.
What is kombucha?
Kombucha is fermented tea, created with sugared tea, bacteria and a SCOBY yeast, that floats above the tea.
REAL Kombucha Royal Flush and Dry Dragon 750ml bottles
I received two of REAL Kombucha’s flavours Royal Flush and Dry Dragon. The bottles are elegantly presented in a glass bottle, with bright vibrant colours of purple for Royal Flush and greens for Dry dragon on the labels. The sparkling fermented tea is sealed with a cork.
Royal Flush
Royal Flush is produced with First Flush Darjeeling tea leaves and has notes of rhubarb, white peach and a touch of blackcurrant. The bottle pours perfectly into a glass, and bubbles flow to the top. I loved the tart crisp acidic flavour it gives.
Dry Dragon
Dry Dragon is brewed from Dragon well tea, and light and citrusy with notes of sweet lemons and grapefruit. This one seemed to be more subtle on the palette and had earthy flavours.
Verdict
REAL kombucha non-alcoholic fermented teas are hands down one of the best kombuchas I have tried. The ones on the current market have that distinct vinegar-like aftertaste in the throat. REAL kombucha, has none of that synthetic flavour as it is fermented using the natural flavour from quality tea leaves. It does a great job replacing sparkling ones I use to love.
