Real Prettiness

Down Syndrome is a chromosomal disorder that affects one in 800 births worldwide. According to the National Down Syndrome Society, the disorder occurs when an individual has an extra copy of chromosome 21, affecting their intellectual abilities and physical development. Often times, they face difficulties fitting into society. German photographer Linda Dajana Kruger’s recent series Real Prettiness looks past the realities of down syndrome and draws out attention to the individual beauty and unique personalities of those with the genetic disorder. Krüger collaborated with Diakonie Werkstatt Mannheim Neckarau, a German employment service agency for the disabled, to recruit models for her series. In these photos, she seeks to showcase her subjects exactly how they wish to be perceived by the public. Clad in fanciful clothing and bold make up, the subjects pose confidently in front of the lens. She gave them freedom to express themselves however they pleased in terms of their attire and pose. Many subjects could not recognize themselves when they saw the final photographs. Kruger’s series epitomizes art and its ability to empower.
