Came to slay! A-listers flocked to the 2020 Critics’ Choice Awards‘ red carpet on January 12, at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California. The 25th annual show kicked off at 7 p.m. EST and celebrated the best and brightest in film and television for the past year.
Coming off the heels of the Golden Globes, there are a lot of reoccurring favorites for the Critics’ Choice. The Irishman led with a whopping 14 nominations while Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is right behind with 12. The other top films leading in nominations are Little Women with nine, 1917 and Marriage Story with eight and Jojo Rabbit, Joker and Parasite have seven noms.
The competition was stiff. Some of the biggest categories included Best Picture (1917, Ford v Ferrari, The Irishman, Jojo Rabbit, Joker, Little Women, Marriage Story, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Parasite and Uncut Gems) and Best Drama Series (The Crown (Netflix), David Makes Man (OWN), Game of Thrones (HBO), The Good Fight (CBS All Access), Pose (FX), Succession (HBO), This Is Us (NBC) and Watchmen (HBO)).
Taye Diggs is hosting the event for the second year in a row. The Private Practice star gushed over the major honor and noted that the audience is filled with his closest pals in the industry.
“I’m remembering from last year being up there, as soon as I get introduced, there’s this moment where I get to see everyone that I’ve grown up with, that I worked with, that I really respect and it’s a trip,” the 49-year-old explained during an interview with KTLA 5 Morning News on January 9. “It’s [an] audience [and] a crowd that I’m proud to be apart of and that I am proud to be in front of.”
One special honoree of the night is Kristen Bell who will be honored with the #SeeHer award. The tribute — which will be presented by her Good Place costar Ted Danson — “recognizes a woman who embodies the values set forth by the SeeHer movement, to push boundaries on changing stereotypes and acknowledge the importance of authentic portrayals of women across the entertainment landscape,” according to the Critics’ Choice website.
Eddie Murphy will also be presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award during the show. All in all, it’s promised to be an amazing night.
