Reflecting Modern Hamburg: The New Fontenay Hotel

Set to open this December, Hamburg’s new luxury hotel, The Fontenay, is making waves with its bold contemporary design and idyllic lakeside location. Now the hotel has revealed its efforts in paying homage to the city it’s in by collaborating with a series of local partners and placing the focus on products made in Hamburg.

This insight into the Hanseatic city’s craftsmanship begins at check-in where writing paraphernalia is supplied by Montblanc, a company that was founded in Hamburg in 1906. The panoramic Fontenay Bar and exclusive Alstersuite will then feature pianos by Steinway & Sons; Hamburg has been the company’s only production site outside of America since 1880.

The hotel’s sprawling balconies overlooking Lake Alster will be furnished with items by the outdoor furniture specialist Garpa, and the library will be filled with more than 1,000 books chosen in collaboration with the Felix Jud Bookshop, which was founded here in 1923. The hotel’s sales team will then be outfitted with business dress and suits from the modern German cult fashion label JOOP!, which has a showroom in the hotel’s neighborhood.

The kitchen is playing its part by sponsoring 30 trees at the Bey Orchard in the Altes Land to provide guests with an array of apple varieties, while craft beers will be supplied by innovative brewery Ratsherrn who have created ‘The Fontenay Pilsner No. 10’ in honor of the hotel’s opening.

Managing director of the Fontenay, Thies Sponholz, says: “It is wonderful that the Hanseatic city is home to so many companies, not only known locally but also with international presence. It was a logical decision for us to use these beautiful local products in The Fontenay providing our guests with a richer authentic Hamburg feeling.“

Built as a reflection of modern Hamburg, the new hotel promises to combine urban nature with a cosmopolitan way of life, sculptural architecture that ensures each space is flooded with light and an inner courtyard planted with trees, as well as a 27-meter-high atrium. Housing a garden restaurant, the panoramic Fontenay Bar and seventh-floor gourmet restaurant, along with a spa encompassing an indoor-outdoor pool, the hotel is sure to capture the attention of luxury travelers around the world when it opens at the end of the year.
