Rei Kawakubo’s Minimalist Furniture goes on Show in Paris

Comme des Garcons Chair

If you have a penchant for furniture, you might very well, too, adore the minimalist statement pieces designed by Rei Kawakubo, who founded the fashion label Comme des Garçons.

Going on show this coming Oct 19-22 at FIAC (Foire Internationale D’Art Contemporain) art fair, the exhibition will present “Comme des garçons furniture – Le mobilier de Rei Kawakubo”, which will run through Dec 22 at the A1043 gallery in Paris.

Each furniture piece crafted by Rei Kawakubo is the embodiment of sobriety. Comprising a table, a screen and five chairs, the collection of furniture does not place a heavy emphasis on comfort, but rather a design to reflect how the carefully selected materials in their most natural forms can frame each outlook that would appeal to the diverse occupants.

“The chairs are designed to impose a particular posture, just as some of the label’s clothes obliged their wearers to hold themselves in a certain way.”

Reflecting the sense of materials and textual effects; the untreated wood has been sanded but not varnished and the metals have been sandblasted and coated in zinc to complement the evolving requirements of the surroundings.

Launched in September 2016, discover at the Parisian gallery A1043, the showcase of cutting-edge artworks by some of the world’s most influential designers such as Philippe Starck and Ettore Sottsass.
