Renovated Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge Ready to Reopen

Marvelously remote and set on the wild shores of one of Canada’s most beautiful landscapes, Baillie Lodges’ acclaimed Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge is set to re-open on June 17 after a $1.7m renovation.

The Vancouver Island hideaway is located on the Clayoquot Sound, a Pacific inlet lined with conifer forests and secluded private bays. The property is one of six luxury lodges worldwide from the Australian firm, Baillie Lodges, which is known for its breathtaking natural locations and sustainable ethos. Only reachable by seaplane or boat, Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge is no different and offers guests the ultimate escape to nature with an abundance of native flora and fauna on its doorstep.

Impressive new upgrades to the property include a complete interior makeover of its 25 tents. But this is nothing like your typical campsite. Luxuriously appointed white canopied retreats are dotted across the sound. Inside, the new style is contemporary and king beds decked in fine linens and generous lounging areas now welcome guests. Picture-perfect views and specially commissioned furniture from local designers increase the feeling of connection with the Vancouver Island landscape.

The Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge interior renovation is also accompanied by a refreshed itinerary of exhilarating wilderness adventures which build upon the lodge’s existing offerings. These range from horseback riding, whale and bear-spotting to canyoning and scenic helicopter flights as well as spa treatments and daily yoga.

Changes are also afoot in the kitchen, as executive chef Asher Blackford, formerly of sister property Southern Ocean Lodge in Australia, has taken the helm. Blackford draws inspiration for his fresh and ever-changing menu from the natural surroundings of the island. Ingredients are sustainable, locally sourced, often foraged and offer a true taste of the destination.

Despite a myriad of changes, this is in fact only the first stage in Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge’s enhancements, with a second round of renovations planned following the 2022 season. These include a significant refurbishment to the Cookhouse restaurant and central guest facilities, as well as a makeover for the Healing Grounds Spa.

After an extended hiatus, Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge’s general manager Sarah Cruse and her team are busy preparing to welcome back guests. She said: “We are super pumped to be showing the new-look Clayoquot to a new generation of keen travelers. Clayoquot has always been a breathtakingly beautiful destination, here on Vancouver Island’s wild west coast. The fresh new look and feel – and sense of feel-at-home inclusion for our guests – will add tremendously to the experience at Clayoquot.”
