Review: Custom Line 108’

Custom Line, a brand born out of a Ferretti Group project to broaden the range of its 30m yachts, has evolved into two hull lines: Custom Line for planing hulls and Navetta for semi-displacement hulls. Ferretti themselves describe the Custom Line boats as “a super-sporty spirit, an incredibly stylish design, large volumes, refined and customisable interiors, state-of-the-art technologies: a planing maxi yacht like the Custom Line 108’ can proudly boast all this.” Our friends at Yacht Style magazine bring us this review.

Since its inception, design for the Custom Line has been delegated to Studio Zuccon who work in cooperation with Ferretti’s own engineering department. The lines of the Custom Line 108’ – the latest outcome of this cooperation – are dominated by the design of the superstructure and the glazing. The hull windows of the four VIP cabins, in turn, stand out for their original rectangular shape; they are approximately 1.70sqm large, have no fiberglass frame and are completed by a double porthole.

The Custom Line 108’ also stands out for the style of its interiors and the almost fanatical attention to detail within the overt luxury of the finishes which typify the top end of Italian designed and built yachts, exemplified by Ferretti.

The PR machine waxes lyrical about the “refined sophistication [that] shines through the tiniest details”, and for once they don’t exaggerate. This is European elegance at its finest, done with taste, balance and a respect for both sea and the superyacht lifestyle, and on a 108ft platform gives you all this and lots and lots of space.

The Custom Line 108’ comes with two MTU 16V 2000 M94, 2638mhp engines that allow it to reach a maximum speed of 26kts and a top cruising speed of 23kts, ensuring a range of 350nm and 430nm. If you want to cruise at the most economic speed, 12kts, the range extends up to 1000nm, very respectable for a vessel of this size.

A boat this size requires a crew, and three crew cabins are provided in the forepeak of the lower deck, each with its own head. Two double and two twin-berth guest cabins, each en-suite site immediately aft, forward of the engine room, while the rear of the lower deck incorporates a large toy room with space for a 20ft rib and a skidoo and engineering and maintenance space.

The main deck, right forward, has the owner’s cabin, absurdly-generous in space: this isn’t a day-boat, it’s for living on. Behind that is the athwartships galley, giving access to the three sets of stairs up to the bridge and the flybridge and down to the guest and crew accommodation, enabling the crew to rapidly and discreetly serve every passenger space on the boat without having to pass through any other guest space.

Right behind the galley is the dining room, seating 10, and opening up behind it the large and comfortable full-width saloon which is not dominated by the large TV situated right at the rear. Big sliding doors open onto a large cockpit, fully-shaded by the flybridge, that seats another 10 people at the table, behind which is a double-sided sofa-lounge that cunningly provides a movable backrest that permits conversion to a huge 15ft-wide sun lounge.

The flybridge can also be accessed from the cockpit in the traditional way and provides yet more dining, seating, lounging and bar space, with still more open deck for just standing around and admiring the view from two floors up. There is also a subsidiary helm position to supplement the fully equipped main bridge.
